How To Become A Legend
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n ex-nurse once told me a story Iâve never forgotten.
She was still a teenager at the time, barely a few weeks into her shiny new career. She was assisting colleagues as they carefully washed an unconscious man in his eighties.
As she was washing one of his hands, to her astonishment, she felt his limp hand grip hers. His eyes flickered open and their gaze met ⊠just for a moment.
Looking directly into her young eyes, he managed to whisper the words, âWhatâs it all been for?â
And then he died.
I donât know about you, but I can think of no worse epitaph than that.
Iâve always strongly felt that our dreams are there for a reason.
Your dreams and mine are as unique as fingerprints.
For most of us, sadly our dreams get shelved, then they gather dust, wither and all too often, die with us.
We have been convinced – some may say brainwashed – into believing that we are âjust too busyâ to follow those dreams.
We have bills to pay, kids to get through college, responsibilities to take care of.
Youâd be right – we do have those things, but we have dreams too.
Why does it have to be âeither/orâ?
Iâm of the opinion that it can be âboth/andâ ⊠and Iâm not alone.
More and more people are looking at following their dreams and passions and figuring out how they can meet their obligations at the same time.
I knew a couple who loved to travel to the worldâs wild places. The guy even wrote travel guides to places as diverse as the Gobi Desert and the Outer Hebrides! When they had a baby, I assumed that would put paid to their wanderings.
But not a bit of it! They equipped themselves with lightweight travel gear – including a cot – so that they could continue having their adventures as a family. I lost touch with them, but that little girl will have had one amazing childhood and an ingrained sense of adventure as she grew up.
Both/and…
What have you ruled out because you believe that one thing is exclusive of something else? Something youâd perhaps love.

Want to be a rock guitarist? What do you imagine is stopping you? (Yes, imagine, because other than death itself, if youâre reading this you still have a chance.)
Want to write a novel, sing in an opera, walk across the USA or see the sunset over the volcanoes of Hawaii?
What are the rocks youâre throwing in the way?
As a result, theyâre more fulfilled, more productive, have more fun and are more passionate about life.
Living that way would ensure youâd never utter the last words of that dying old man, wouldnât it?
Next Saturday, (July 9th), Iâm putting on a training to make sure that doesnât happen to you.
