Many years ago, a fellow bibliophile friend sold over 90% of his precious book collection at the time so that he could finance a trip to a foreign country to be with the woman he loved. I was horrified that he could treat his books so badly. But he said to me, “Think about it. Each of those books I bought because I thought they contained some truth I needed. Some did, and I’ve absorbed that truth and I don’t need those books any more.
“And some did not … and so I don’t need those books any more either. And the ones that were my true friends will come back to me or be replaced in time.”
