Much has been said about the benefits of visualization, but can things you “simply imagine” really make a meaningful difference to you and your life?
Now, we could go to some deep places here, but let’s begin with a stonker of a question:
How much of what you think is real is actually imagined?
Have you ever seen a rainbow? It’s not really there you know! Your eyes see refracted light refracted through raindrops purely because of your location in relation to the rain and the sun.
Okay. How about the sky? There isn’t really a blue ceiling to the world. Or the position of a star in the night sky which only appears to be where it is because of where we are in space. Go to another planet and that star will appear to be in a completely different place.
Let’s take this a step further.
Imagine you are hiking through the woods in a place where there are warning signs all over the place to beware of bears, when out of the trees jumps a bear. (I’m no expert on bear behaviour. It’s just an example, ok?)
You’d probably run.
But suppose it was just one of your friends playing a prank dressed in a bear suit. In that moment, if you believed it was a bear, you’d still run. (And your friend would get a stupidity medal. I’m no expert on your friends’ behaviour either!)
The point is, you act according to what you believe. And it has been proven time and again that your brain – which includes your entire nervous system – cannot tell the difference between something vividly imagined and a “real” event. This is probably because in actual fact all of “reality” is taking place inside your brain anyway!
As a human being, you have the astonishing ability to create any reality you like inside your head. (Just watch some cartoons if you don’t think people can do that).
If you create a reality that feels good … excuse me, let me repeat that in italics … that feels good … and if you make it detailed and if you keep on repeating it over and over in your mind here is a summary of what will definitely happen:
Definite Visualization Benefits:
- You’ll feel good a lot of the time.
- When you feel good, others will enjoy being around you more.
- As a result of both of the above, you will have a lot more fun.
Now, that’s for sure. Guaranteed. Just to add to that, here, based on evidence of a vast number of scientific studies involving everyone from schoolchildren to athletes, not to mention people who have overcome stammers, phobias and anxiety states, here is what will probably happen:
Probable Visualization Benefits:
- You start becoming what you visualize.
- Your reality starts turning into your visualization.
So why don’t more people do it? The evidence is overwhelming that it works! Briefly, I think the answer to that is that people are afraid of disappointment.
What they’ve failed to take into account that their whole life is likely to be disappointing if they don’t start using the incredible power of visualization.
If you’ve experimented with visualization please tell us some of your story – and indicate if the outcome was positive or a learning experience in the comments section below.
