What Will THEY Say About You?

“What will the neighbours say?”
My mother used to ask this in mock horror when I misbehaved as a child. Even then, I think I sensed that I really didn’t care too much what the neighbours thought of my deeds or misdeeds.
But many do.
And many care about what their mother will think of them. Or their employer.
Given that there are close to 7 billion people in the world, if you want to know how to stop being embarrassed, we’re all going to have to draw the line somewhere.
I suggest drawing it right here – around your own feet.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve never needed a law to tell me that killing people is wrong. It feels true anyway.
And do you really need a commandment or ten to know that stealing someone’s things or running off with somebody’s wife is actually not okay?
Can you not feel inside that being kind to people feels nice all round? Or that smiling at someone gives you – and them – a nicer day than snarling at them, even if they did cut you up at the last junction?
Live from inside. Check out the rules you were born with.
And assume the neighbours are all whispering nice things about you.
