I once attended an expensive workshop where an attendee challenged the leader with the question, âWhat do you do with all the money?â
Without missing a beat, the reply that shot back was, âI spend it. What else is there to do with money?â
Thatâs not only a good answer. Itâs the only answer there is!
However, for many people, the problem isnât the spending of the stuff, itâs gathering enough of it together and keeping the flow going so that their lives can keep going.
If youâre at that end of the spectrum, keep reading because Iâm about to reveal to you a golden key that has the potential to unleash that flow of cash â towards you â for the rest of your life.
I say âpotentialâ because it really depends on whether you turn that key in the lock or not. It may surprise you to know that tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of people know about this key but donât ever put it in the lock!
My upfront advice about that is, of course: donât be one of them!
Letâs return to that workshop leader for a moment. What if his answer had been, âI just keep it under the mattress.â
Now that would have been crazy because heâd have been in the same position as if he was poor! (Incidentally, Iâm not averse to saving money. Thatâs not the same as hoarding it. Saving for bigger and better things, which may include your childrenâs education for example, seems perfectly sensible to me).
Money is called âcurrencyâ because it has to flow, like a current. All of which means that there are a ton of people out there who are willing to spend it on you. You have only to give them a good enough reason â and Iâm about to tell you what that is.
As a group of people, who would you say are the highest paid in the world? Do you think itâs doctors, nurses or paramedics who save lives?
Nope. Not them.
How about the militia who protect our freedom and safety?
Not them either.
Teachers, then, without whom we wouldnât be able to read or write and who devoted themselves to educating us so that we could each have the best possible chance of a good career?
Definitely not them.
Surely, it must be politicians?
Erm, well no. (I donât know if anybodyâs quite sure what their contribution is).
Some people in some of those professions do earn a high income, but generally, as groups it isnât any of them.
The answer is … (drum roll please) …
Entertainers!
Pop groups & musicians of all kinds, football players, comedians, writers and actors can earn untold millions. No one forces them into retirement either. (Think of the Rolling Stones who are well past retirement age, for example). In fact, many of those people go on earning money for generations after theyâre dead!
Why? Whatâs the contribution they make that far outstrips all the others I mentioned put together?
The answer to that is very, very simple.
They make us feel good.
I know, I know. We canât all be entertainers and I completely know too that for every entertainer who makes it to the top there are thousands who donât.
But everybody wants to feel good and there are myriad ways to make that happen.
Let me just re-emphasise that. Everybody wants to feel good. Period.
You want a new car, a new hairstyle or a holiday? How would having any of those things, (assuming you do want them), make you feel?
Good!
At least, thatâs the plan. A car that doesnât work or a disastrous holiday or hairstyle can actually result in refunds! Imagine! Some holiday companies will give you money back if the experience you have with them doesnât make you feel good!
Never mind that you still got to Ibiza, drank the bar dry, slept in their sheets and availed yourself of the jetski class. The plane was late, the waiters were rude and the room was full of cockroaches?
Well, I donât truthfully know if that would entitle you to a refund, but Iâm sure most reputable holiday companies would take you very seriously, because theyâre in the business of selling good experiences. If you didnât get that, the least they can do is try to compensate you for that because they want you â and all your friends â to come again.
So hereâs the key.
You may not be an entertainer, but you want to make it your business to make as many people as you can feel good in some way.
You can thank them, praise them, compliment them or just smile at them. Those things are entirely free and can be done all day long.
You can acknowledge some achievement or skill they have. It doesnât have to be exceptional â just letting somebody know they make a fabulous cup of tea, (if they really do), can do it.
On top of that there are endless ways to make people feel better.
Remember: itâs the only thing anybody ever wants! If you want food itâs because hunger is a less comfortable feeling than being well fed. If you want a new car itâs because the new one will make you feel less worried about breaking down on the highway or perhaps because itâs a smart one and it makes you feel important.
Feeling, feeling, feeling. Thatâs it.
We appear to have come a long way from talking about how to get money, but the truth is weâve never once drifted off topic.
Here, in a nutshell, is that golden key I promised you: Every day, no matter whatâs happening, make it your primary intent to make anyone and everyone you come into contact with feel better than before they encountered you.
That includes waitresses in coffee shops, cashiers in banks and supermarkets and the person who delivers your mail and sweeps your streets.
Make people feel good and doors you never expected to open, or even knew were there, will suddenly fling themselves wide for you. On the other side of many of those doors are opportunities for making money.
People will want you around. People spend money, because, as the workshop leader remarked, there is nothing else to do with money. And people spend money on things â including people â who make them feel good.
And Iâll let you in on one more secret too.
Practice what Iâm teaching you here and a remarkable thing will happen to you. (In addition to the inevitable influx of money, that is!) As you set about making other people feel good, youâll feel good too!
People who feel good and who make others feel good are very attractive people. And one of the things they attract is money.
