Why You Should Stop “Telling It Like It Is”

(And Start Lying To Yourself)

Years ago, I came upon the idea of “positive thinking” for the first time in my life.  Then, over time, the concept got a bad rap, and I have to admit, I was influenced by the naysayers for a while.

That is, until one day I woke up and realised that I was starting to notice being unhappy more often again.  Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t like being miserable.

And then it dawned on me that I was keeping my misery going by telling people – people who genuinely loved and cared about me – what I thought was the truth.

I was “telling it like it is.”

In other words, they’d ask me how my business was going, for example, and I’d tell them how worried I was about lack of money or customers.  I remember hearing myself say out loud many times that “I had no idea” what I was going to do!

Well, keep telling yourself that and your subconscious responds like a well programmed computer.  “I have no idea.”  Then you get no ideas!

Then I got more resourceful – because I remembered that I’m resourceful!

I mean, I have an imagination, (just like you do.)  I have the capacity to think new thoughts, take different actions any time I want … just like you do.

I began thinking about things I’d accomplished in the past that I’d once considered very difficult to nigh on impossible.  (Just as I guarantee you have!)

Things like: learning to drive or swim, (that was a HUGE one for me.)  Learning to play the acoustic guitar was another.  Or walking on hot coals – which I’ve now done three times in my life at Anthony Robbins’ events – but of which I was petrified especially the first time.

So why would I consider that I couldn’t make it in business?

Why would you consider you couldn’t make it … in business or anything else?

Why would you even entertain that possibility?

The difference was only that with all those other things I knew other people had done it so it couldn’t be that hard.  I have the capacity and ability, (just as you do.)

But with business, my role models were mostly my Dad and his two brothers who were all in business when I was a child and they made it look and seem incredibly difficult.  (Honestly, they weren’t terribly good at it either.)

So I couldn’t see myself succeeding in business.

Until I realised that of course I could! (And so can you!)

And I changed my tune.  Whenever people would ask me how my business was going I’d tell them how excited I am about it … because I hold the vision of being successful in my head.

Is that telling it like it is … or like it will be?

Well, it’s both, I suppose.

Is that lying?

No … because there’s not a single idea that didn’t begin inside someone’s head.

Isn’t that where reality really is?
