What’s The Remedy When Life Rains On Your Parade?

Life has it’s ups and downs for everyone, and I suppose it would be pretty boring if it was all plain sailing, but what can you do at those times when the bad stuff just keeps on coming?

Here are my 3 top tips for how to be happy in life – no matter what happens:

  1. Roll with it.  Allow yourself to feel it fully – even if it’s just for 5 minutes.  Notice where you experience the pain – or whatever emotions you’re feeling – in your body.  Ask yourself what shape it is, what colour(s) it seems to have, what it weighs, what it’s made of … discover all you can about it as if it was an object separate from you.  You’ll make an amazing discovery …

It is!  You can observe the hurt and the down-ness much as you can watch a soap opera.  You can feel for the characters, but a part of you knows this isn’t permanent reality.  Then you can remind yourself that, no matter how bad things seem, “this too will pass.”

2.  Take a measurement.  Invent an imaginary scale from 0 to 100, with zero being, “I don’t have any negative feelings and I feel fine” and a hundred being, “I’m a hundred percent miserable – this is the worst I’ve ever felt.”

Now ask yourself where you are right now on that scale.  There are no right or wrong answers – this is entirely subjective!

Let’s say you decide you’re at 87.

Now ask yourself, “What could I do to get to 86?”

Just one point nearer zero – that’s all you want.  Maybe you could watch a Charlie Chaplin movie on Youtube.  Or you could just grin.  Or treat yourself to a coffee in your favourite coffee shop.  One of my friends used to buy herself a luxury bar of soap.  I like nice pens.  (I’ve drawn the line at Mont Blanc so far, but I’m always open to gifts!)

You’re not trying to fix everything, but you’ll find that by taking one baby step, others will occur to you naturally – and you’ll start to climb out of the pit of despair.

3. Change your body language.  This always works and it’s instantaneous.  Smile, jump, dance around your kitchen … do something that changes the way you are using your body.  You can even quicken your pace slightly.  Squaring your shoulders and taking a deep breath helps too.  (Remember to let it go as well!)

Will these tactics make all your problems go away?

Absolutely not – but they will free you to cope, and pretty quickly you’ll discover that they’ll shrink, and you’ll grow.

Then one day, it’ll dawn on you that not only have you overcome all kinds of obstacles already in your life, but that the answers were where you instinctively knew they were all along – inside you.
